Ulysses Veterinary Clinics Cairns Desexing Your Pet

Desexing or neutering your pet is a surgical procedure that prevents them from being able to reproduce. In male pets it is commonly referred to as “castration”, and in female pets as “speying”. This is the most frequent surgery performed by our Cairns vets, and generally your pet is home by the evening of surgery. The most common age to desex your pet is between 4 and 8 months, however they are never too old to be desexed.

There Are Many Benefits To Desexing Your Pet

  • Preventing unwanted litters, which can be very costly, and may add to the already overwhelming number of stray animals that are put down each year.
  • Prevention of testicular cancer and prostate disease in males, and it can help prevent pyometra (infection of the uterus) and mammary tumours (breast cancer) in females.
  • Stopping the “heat” cycle in females.
  • Decreasing aggression towards humans and other animals, especially in males.
  • Being less prone to wander, especially in males.
  • Reduction of council registration fees.

What To Do Before Surgery

  • Make a booking for your pets operation.
  • If your pet is a dog, you can wash them the day before surgery as they are then unable to be washed after until the stitches are removed.
  • You can give your pet an evening meal as normal the day prior to surgery, but do not leave food out overnight. Water should be freely available to your pet until 8am on the day of surgery.
  • A blood test may be performed prior to surgery to check vital organ function.
  • One of our Cairns vets will perform a thorough physical examination before administering an anaesthetic.
  • Intravenous fluid therapy is required during most types of surgery. This will be discussed with you prior to the procedure.
  • To ensure your pet is as comfortable as possible, all pets receive pain relief as part of the desexing procedure, and we may prescribe medication for you to administer at home for a few days after the procedure.

What To Do After Surgery

  • Keep your pet restrained and quiet. It can take some time for the effects of anaesthetic to wear off.
  • Keeping them quiet is also essential to allow the wound to heal.
  • Food should be limited to small portions only on the night of surgery. Follow any dietary instructions that our Cairns vets have provided.
  • Ensure all post-surgical medications (if any) are administered as per the label instructions.
  • Ensure your pet’s rest area is clean to avoid infection.
  • Check the surgical wound at least twice daily for any signs of infection or disruption (e.g. bleeding, swelling, redness or discharge). Contact us immediately if any of these occur. Do not wait to see if they will spontaneously resolve.
  • Prevent your pet from licking or chewing the wound. Special cone-shaped collars assist with this problem. A single chew can remove the careful stitching with disastrous effects.
  • Ensure you return to us on time for post-operative check-ups and removal of stitches.

Common Questions About Desexing Pets

Will desexing affect my pet's personality?

Your pet will retain their pre-operation personality, possibly with the added bonus of being calmer and less aggressive.

Should my female have one litter first?

No – it is actually better for her not to have any litters before being spayed. Her risk of developing breast cancer increases if she is allowed to go through her first heat.

Will it cause my pet to become fat?

Your pet’s metabolism may be slowed due to hormonal changes after desexing, however this is easily managed with adjusting feeding and ensuring adequate exercise. There is no reason a desexed pet cannot be maintained at a normal weight.

Is desexing painful?

As with all surgery, there is some tenderness immediately after the procedure, but most pets will recover very quickly. We administer pain relief prior to surgery and after surgery too. Your pet will be discharged with a short course of pain relief medication to take at home for the first few days after the surgery. In many cases, your pet will likely need some encouragement to take it easy!

Will my dog lose its "guard dog" instinct?

No, your dog will be just as protective of their territory as before the surgery.

Exceptional Care For Your Best Friend

4.8
Dr Carole is our trusted home vet, so it was an automatic decision to attend the Ulysses vet Clinic where Dr Carole is based when our beloved elderly dog had to have an operation on his ear. Surprise, surprise: not only is the clinic in an easy-to-find location with adequate parking, but the Ulysses team are truly tops, showing genuine love, care and understanding to their patients and their human companions. After our elderly dog's operation, we were explained the medical condition and aftercare treatment in a way I understood. To top it off, the vets wisely decided that my boy didn't need the unnecessary vaccination he'd been given previously, and they explained why. This proved, without a doubt, that for the first time in years and years, I'd found a Vet Clinic that was in for the health of their patients, not for the money. Then I received the bill. It was about half the price I expected to pay. And my dog's recovery after surgery? Fantastic, absolutely fabulous. Thank you, Ulysses Vet Clinic. You are much appreciated.

Absolutely Outstanding Care – Couldn’t Recommend Ulysses Vet Clinic More Highly! We’ve been clients of Ulysses Vet Clinic at both their Stratford and Whitfield locations, and the care we’ve received from Demian and his team has been nothing short of exceptional. Their professionalism, compassion, and genuine love for animals shine through in everything they do.Over the years, they’ve looked after our animals through every stage of life – from desexing and vaccinations, to treating our million-mile-an-hour Border Collie’s broken front leg, to saving our beloved Rotti x after a sudden and serious case of HGE. They’ve also provided wonderful aged care for our Shepherd x in his twilight years, and they keep a close eye on the health of the baby of the pack, the world’s smallest Kelpie with the world’s biggest attitude! They are always so welcoming – even when I walk in with four hounds in tow, who absolutely adore them! The team’s warmth, patience, and expertise create a real sense of trust and ease.If you’re after a vet clinic with heart, skill, and a truly personal touch, Ulysses is second to none. We wouldn’t go anywhere else.

We feel so lucky to have shared in those moments with you.Your trust, loyalty, and warmth as clients never go unnoticed. It’s families like yours that remind us why we do what we do every day. We’re grateful for the laughter, the cuddles, the chaos, and everything in between.Thank you again for such a heartfelt review. Give our love to the whole pack — we can’t wait to see you all again soon (and we’ll be ready with treats and ear scratches!).With gratitude,Demian and the Ulysses Vet Clinic team 🐾❤️
