A puppy teeth assessment is a key part of ensuring your young dog’s overall health and development. Puppies start teething at around three weeks old, and by six months their baby teeth are replaced by permanent adult teeth. During this transitional phase issues can sometimes arise. This includes retained baby teeth, misaligned bites, or abnormal growth patterns. If left untreated, retained baby teeth can lead to overcrowding, tartar buildup and discomfort.
We can provide puppy teeth assessments in conjunction with a vaccination appointment, or you can book this as a separate service. During the assessment, our Cairns vets will evaluate the health of the gums and jaw development, and check there are no early signs of dental disease. We can also provide advice on at-home dental care for your puppy, including the introduction of teeth brushing or dental chews, which are crucial for preventing tartar and plaque buildup as your dog grows.
By incorporating puppy teeth assessments into your puppy’s overall care routine, you’re ensuring they grow up with healthy teeth and as with most things, early detection and intervention with dental problems prevent bigger problems developing as your puppy grows.
