At Ulysses Veterinary Clinics Cairns we provide your pets with professional dental services. Just like humans, our pets are vulnerable to gum disease and problems with their teeth. Alarmingly, it is estimated that up to 80% of dogs and 70% of cats suffer from some form of dental disease by the age of three! At the early stages this presents as tartar (also known as calculus), which appears as a yellow-brown material on the teeth and is usually accompanied by bad breath. It is easily taken care of with a scale and polish treatment.
During a scale and polish, one of our Cairns vets will thoroughly clean your pet’s teeth, removing plaque and tartar using their expertise and professional equipment. If it’s in the early stages of development, this can be done in a usual appointment, without the need for sedation. However, if the plaque and tartar extends above and/or below the gumline, then we may need to anesthetise your pet to allow us to complete a thorough dental examination, and scale treatment without causing distress. After scaling, the teeth are polished to smooth out the enamel, making it harder for plaque to adhere in the future.
Regular dental care, including scaling and polishing, will keep your pet’s mouth fresh and healthy and avoid the development of dental disease which can have serious health and wellness impacts for your pet. You can contribute to your pet’s dental health at home by providing them with dental chews and bones.
