Ulysses Veterinary Clinics Cairns Behavioural Advice

Behavioural problems can be due to behavioural causes or medical causes, or both. Our Cairns vets will investigate your pets behavioural problems by starting with a full history and examination, sometimes your pet may require blood or urine tests to rule out underlying medical conditions, to accurately diagnose a problem. Behavioural problems are often the combined effect of many factors, including your pet’s environment and learning. Genetics can also predispose your pet to some behaviours, however the expression of those behaviours will depend on your pet’s early socialisation and training.

Early training and socialisation is essential to have a happy, well-adjusted pet. Punishment of behavioural problems often worsens the situation and it is very important that professional advice is obtained as soon as the problem appears to effectively resolve it. Positive reinforcement is the preferred method for changing behaviour, however this also needs to be used carefully as it can encourage undesirable behaviour if used incorrectly.

Changes in the environment may also contribute to the emergence of behavioural problems. For example, changes in routine, a new member of the household (pet, baby or spouse), moving house, or the loss of a family member or pet can have a dramatic impact on behaviour. Any medical or degenerative changes associated with ageing may cause your pet to be even more sensitive to these environmental changes.

How to Treat Behavioural Problems

There’s no simple ‘cure’ for behavioural problems, so be careful when taking ‘helpful’ advice. For example, people with a destructive dog are sometimes told that getting another dog will ‘fix’ the problem, however, they may end up with two destructive dogs. It’s very important that the cause of the problem is addressed, not just the symptoms of the problem. For example don’t chain a dog up because it is digging; find out the reason for the digging and treat the dog accordingly.

When it comes to your pet’s behaviour, it’s extremely important to seek the advice of a qualified veterinarian. Changing problem behaviour requires commitment on behalf of the whole family, as everyone your pet interacts with will be responsible for encouraging desirable behaviour. For some problems such as barking, escaping, aggression, or separation anxiety it is beneficial to see the pet in its natural environment, thus a home visit may be appropriate. Some cases may also require medications alongside the new training techniques to get the best outcome.

For this and other behavioural problems we advise you contact us to make an appointment with one of our Cairns vets.

Exceptional Care For Your Best Friend

Dr Carole is our trusted home vet, so it was an automatic decision to attend the Ulysses vet Clinic where Dr Carole is based when our beloved elderly dog had to have an operation on his ear. Surprise, surprise: not only is the clinic in an easy-to-find location with adequate parking, but the Ulysses team are truly tops, showing genuine love, care and understanding to their patients and their human companions. After our elderly dog's operation, we were explained the medical condition and aftercare treatment in a way I understood. To top it off, the vets wisely decided that my boy didn't need the unnecessary vaccination he'd been given previously, and they explained why. This proved, without a doubt, that for the first time in years and years, I'd found a Vet Clinic that was in for the health of their patients, not for the money. Then I received the bill. It was about half the price I expected to pay. And my dog's recovery after surgery? Fantastic, absolutely fabulous. Thank you, Ulysses Vet Clinic. You are much appreciated.

Absolutely Outstanding Care – Couldn’t Recommend Ulysses Vet Clinic More Highly! We’ve been clients of Ulysses Vet Clinic at both their Stratford and Whitfield locations, and the care we’ve received from Demian and his team has been nothing short of exceptional. Their professionalism, compassion, and genuine love for animals shine through in everything they do.Over the years, they’ve looked after our animals through every stage of life – from desexing and vaccinations, to treating our million-mile-an-hour Border Collie’s broken front leg, to saving our beloved Rotti x after a sudden and serious case of HGE. They’ve also provided wonderful aged care for our Shepherd x in his twilight years, and they keep a close eye on the health of the baby of the pack, the world’s smallest Kelpie with the world’s biggest attitude! They are always so welcoming – even when I walk in with four hounds in tow, who absolutely adore them! The team’s warmth, patience, and expertise create a real sense of trust and ease.If you’re after a vet clinic with heart, skill, and a truly personal touch, Ulysses is second to none. We wouldn’t go anywhere else.
