Ulysses Veterinary Clinics Cairns Puppy & Dog Vaccinations

Responsible pet care requires puppys be given their initial course of vaccinations, with ongoing vaccinations provided to dogs throughout their lifetime.

Puppy Vaccinations

Puppies are temporarily protected against many diseases by antibodies received through their mother’s milk. These maternal antibodies decline in the first few weeks of their lives, after which they need a vaccination to induce immunity. The age at which maternal antibodies drop enough to require vaccination is highly variable, which is why puppys require a series of vaccinations.

Adult Dog Vaccinations

The immunity from puppy vaccination weakens over time and your pet can again become susceptible to disease. Annual health checks and booster vaccinations, will provide the best protection for the life of your pet.

Infectious Diseases Of Dogs We Vaccinate Against

  • Canine Leptospirosis. This is a serious disease risk in Cairns, with high death rates. It’s spread by the urine of infected rats and is usually transmitted to dogs who ingest contaminated food and water (e.g. drink from puddles), with increased risk around rainforest and sugar cane areas.
  • Canine Parvovirus. This disease is most common in young dogs, but can affect all ages. Symptoms can include bloody diarrhoea, uncontrollable vomiting and severe abdominal pain. Some infected dogs will die from parvovirus, even if they receive intensive veterinary care. Parvovirus is spread via dog faeces and is very persistent in the environment, even after the faeces has been cleaned away. For this reason, it is not necessary to have direct contact with other dogs for the disease to be spread.
  • Canine Distemper Virus. This highly contagious viral disease can affect dogs of any age, with young puppies at highest risk. Symptoms vary but can include fever, coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, vomiting, diarrhoea and loss of appetite. Muscle tremors, fits and paralysis may occur later in the disease. Treatment is usually ineffective.
  • Canine Cough. Symptoms include a dry, hacking cough which can persist for weeks and can sometimes become pneumonia. It’s highly contagious and distressing for dogs.
  • Canine Coronavirus. Another contagious virus that causes loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea. Although most dogs will recover with treatment, coronavirus can be fatal.

We took our bull arab to Ulysses from her first lepto shot to her last breath 💔 and really appreciated their support, their expertise, and their honesty. The whole team there is visibly passionate about animals and want the best outcomes for you and your pet.I have a lot of admiration for the work they do, the tough situations they face every day, and the empathy and professionalism they need to show. Highly recommend!

5 stars for the best vet clinic. The team always looks after our little loved ones. I really appreciate their pricing and that I never feel pushed into getting something for my pets. We have struggled to find a good vet but im glad to say we have now. We drive 30mins to get there and its worth it everytime.

We love Ulysses! Every staff member here from front desk to vet are such skilled, kind and patient people. With two nervous rescue dogs (Nigel & Millie) I’ve always left feeling like I’ve had a thorough consult in a judgement free zone. Never difficult to get in, fairly priced and very diligent staff. Would comfortably recommend to anyone looking for a new Vet Clinic 🩵

Dr Carole is our trusted home vet, so it was an automatic decision to attend the Ulysses vet Clinic where Dr Carole is based when our beloved elderly dog had to have an operation on his ear. Surprise, surprise: not only is the clinic in an easy-to-find location with adequate parking, but the Ulysses team are truly tops, showing genuine love, care and understanding to their patients and their human companions. After our elderly dog's operation, we were explained the medical condition and aftercare treatment in a way I understood. To top it off, the vets wisely decided that my boy didn't need the unnecessary vaccination he'd been given previously, and they explained why. This proved, without a doubt, that for the first time in years and years, I'd found a Vet Clinic that was in for the health of their patients, not for the money. Then I received the bill. It was about half the price I expected to pay. And my dog's recovery after surgery? Fantastic, absolutely fabulous. Thank you, Ulysses Vet Clinic. You are much appreciated.
Response from the owner: Thank you for such a lovely review Magda, we're so glad to hear Leroy is recovering well!
